Benefit Types

In most cases, veterans benefits will be one of the following: Chapter 30 (Mongomery GI Bill®), Chapter 33 (Post 9/11), Chapter 35 (DEA), Chapter 1606 (Montgomery GI Bill® Selected Reserves). Further details on these benefit types can be located here. If the student receives the benefit funding directly, please reach out to ensure the timely payment of your bill.

IMPORTANT: the DoD announced that they will no longer authorize Tuition Assistance for classes for which a member is also receiving benefits under the Montgomery GI Bill® – Selected Reserve program (chapter 1606 of title 10, United States Code), Reserve Educational Assistance Program (chapter 1607 of title 10, United States Code), or any other GI Bill® program other than the Montgomery GI Bill® – Active Duty program (chapter 30 of title 38, United States Code) or the Post-9/11 GI Bill® program (chapter 33 of title 38, United States Code).

Note: Warren Wilson College does not participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program.

GI Bill® is a registered trademark of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).  More information about education benefits offered by VA is available at the official U.S. government website at https:\\www.benefits.va.gov/bill.

Applying for Veterans Benefits

The following steps are necessary for the WWC Financial Aid Office to successfully process any veterans benefits:

1. Go to and review the "How to Apply" page on the education section of the VA.gov website -- click here to open the page in another window

2. Use the dropdown menu under "How Do I Apply" to find and complete the correct benefit application

3. Once approved by the VA, you will receive two certificates of eligibility. Please keep one of these for your files and send the other to the Warren Wilson College Financial Aid Office

4. Submit the "Intention to Utilize VA Benefits" form to notify the WWC Financial Aid office of your intent to use VA benefits

Once you have applied, you should receive notification from the VA that your application is being processed. It can take up to three weeks for you to receive this letter.

You will typically receive the two certificates of eligibility mentioned above within 60 days of completing your application through the VA.gov website. Please be sure to retain one of these certificates and get the other to the WWC Financial Aid Office. This step is crucial, as the FAO will use this document to certify your benefits.

IMPORTANT: the VA can take up to 9-12 weeks to finish processing your benefits. Please initiate the application process as early as possible in order to ensure that your benefits can be processed in a timely manner. Please also be sure to stay on top of all other requirements for admissions, financial aid, billing, and registration during this time.

Other Important Information

Warren Wilson College is an approved institution for veterans to attend and receive VA educational benefits through Chapters 35, 1606, 30 and 33 (Post 9/11 GI Bill) in all undergraduate programs. The MFA program is an approved program for Chapter 33 for tuition and fees only, and does not include housing benefits.

If you have received VA educational benefits at a previous college, you will need to complete a Request for Change of Program or Place of Training online at www.gibill.va.gov. Please keep a copy of the form for yourself and also send a copy to the WWC Financial Aid Office. In addition, you will receive a new Certificate of Eligibility (COE) confirming your remaining eligibility for the benefits for which you applied. Please also make a copy of your COE for the Financial Aid Office.

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has a useful GI Bill Comparison Tool at www.benefits.va.gov/gibill/comparison. This tool assists students to determine eligibility and choose the school that works best for them. You are highly encouraged to use this tool to assist you in your decision-making process.

Your eligibility for VA educational benefits will not affect your eligibility for federal Title IV aid (Pell Grant, Federal Direct Loans, Federal Work Study, Federal SEOG, etc.). Because of this, we still encourage all benefit recipients to complete the FAFSA at studentaid.gov. Please note, however, that your VA benefits MAY affect your eligibility for state aid depending upon the policies of your state of residency.

Please contact your nearest Veterans' Administration office for counseling if you have questions about your eligibility for educational benefits. You may also call 1-888-442-4551 or refer to the Benefits/Education section of the va.gov website to find listings for useful contact points.
